Made in Calgary: the 2000s

We’re included in the upcoming exhibition Made in Calgary: The 2000s, curated by Katherine Ylitalo.

The last of the Made in Calgary series, this show runs September 20- December 14th at both the Glenbow Museum and the Nickle Galleries.

“…The exhibition explores the diverse approaches of artists creating in Calgary – both emerging and established — such as Diane Bos, Chris Millar, Ron Moppett, George Webber, Dave&Jenn, Jackie Anderson, Alex Caldwell, Mark Mullin, and many others.

The extensive spectrum of their work demonstrates a fascination with both the physics and subjectivity of perception; the relationship between photography and computers; an immersion in pop culture; the presence of narrative (be it fantasy, fiction, memory, history or a blend), an abiding collage aesthetic; a scrappy do it yourself approach; and the redefinition of art and fine craft.

Expect an exhibition that reflects the not-yet-defined, freewheeling nature of contemporary art in Calgary. The artists whose work is in this decade’s exhibition are selected for their outstanding art, but also as representatives of the larger art community in Calgary that is remarkably exciting and vibrant.”

Lieux échafaudés / Architectonics of Space at Galerie Simon Blais

Lieux échafaudés / Architectonics of Space is open now until December 22 at Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal.

“The works included in this exhibition give the illusion of perspectival space merging with painting surface. There are sufficient similarities among them for us to be tempted to see a possible direction being taken by young Canadian painters. It is clear that the practices of several other Canadian artists, like Martin Golland or Étienne Zack, fall within an analogous aesthetic; such a relationship further strengthens the impression of a trend, an approach that is also evident on the international scene in the work of Germany’s Matthias Weischer. It will be particularly interesting to see whether the aesthetic concerns common to these young Canadian painters will, over the long term, become part of the history of our country’s art. The exhibition’s curators, Paul Bradley and Catherine Plaisance, wager that this trend in the visual arts will have a far from passing influence…” (taken from the Galerie Simon Blais website).

The exhibition features work by Julie Beugin, Leigh Bridges, DaveandJenn, Alexis Lavoie, Jessica Peters and Ehryn Torrell .
